Hair loss (alopecia) is a common problem in men that can start as early as the late teens or early 20s. It often begins with a receding hair line or thinning in the crown and can worsen over time, resulting in complete or partial baldness. Everyone sheds some hair each day, but if you notice you’re suddenly losing significant amounts of hair or missing patches of hair on your scalp, it may be time to talk to Dr. Stanley, a hair loss and hair transplant expert.

It is estimated that 35 million men in the United States are affected by male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. “Andro” refers to the androgens (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone) necessary to produce male-pattern hair loss (MPHL). “Genetic” refers to the inherited gene necessary for male pattern hair loss to occur.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS IN MEN

For men, the most common cause of hair loss is genetics, specifically an inherited sensitivity to DHT, which is a by-product of testosterone that shrinks the hair follicles. This condition is commonly known as male pattern baldness and it can be distressing for men of varying ages. Other causes of (or factors contributing to) male hair loss include:

  • Disease
  • Reaction to medication
  • Extreme stress

At Ava Hair Restoration, the surgical hair restoration technique of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are performed under local anesthesia. Donor hair is harvested from the donor area which is the region of hair on the back of the head in which the hair is genetically programmed not to fall out. These hairs are permanent.

This procedure is performed using a microscope which is designed specifically for hair restoration surgery and yields microscopic grafts of individual follicular units, of one to four hairs. These precious grafts are placed in a cold, tissue storage and kept as such until they are meticulously placed in the recipient sites created by Dr. Stanley.

Great attention is given to the angle and direction of each small recipient site in order to maximize the redistribution of your transplanted hair to achieve the best density, meaning to give the most natural looking result. In most hair transplant procedures, the one-hair grafts are placed in the frontal hairline and temporal peeks, the two-hair grafts immediately behind the hairline grafts and the three and four-hair follicular units are placed through central and forelock zones.

Since most patients are concerned about washing their newly transplanted hair for the first time, we encourage all of patients to come back the next day for a complimentary hair wash to learn how to care for their transplanted hair during the crucial first week of recovery. Additionally, surgical hair restoration patients are provided with a specific daily routine to follow for the first 10 days post-operatively. After the hair restoration procedure, if there is any discomfort related to the procedure it is normally treated with oral medications.

Transplanted hair goes through the same resting and growing phases of your normal hair. The hairs of the transplanted grafts will begin to grow at approximately 4 months after your procedure and continue through months 10 – 12 post operatively.

Other Hair Loss Treatments for Men

Hair restoration surgery isn’t always the only choice for revitalizing your natural hair. For individuals seeking solutions for hair loss or thinning hair, there are a number of proven products and treatments prescribed by Dr. Stanley that are good options to explore. Hair restoration surgery is the only permanent solution, but many of our patients experience great success in slowing their hair loss by using non-surgical products and procedures.

What are some of the reasons why Dr. Stanley may decide to use non-surgical solutions?

  • Your hair loss is not yet significant enough for hair restoration surgery
  • There may not be enough donor hair for transplantation
  • Other health reasons may prevent a patient from being a candidate for hair transplantation surgery

There are many medications your dermatologist can recommend including Minoxidil topical treatment, Propecia or Finasteride. For some men, especially those with a donor area of hair that hasn’t been affected by hair loss, hair transplantation surgery may be recommended. In fact, hair transplant surgery is the only method of hair restoration that results in permanent hair growth.
